SYNOPSIS

A Nor’easter is lashing the Maine coast as the estranged family of Admiral George Becker, an eccentric former Apollo astronaut, gather at his isolated island compound to ring in the New Millennium. Joining the gathering is an enigmatic Eastern European émigré and former political science protégé, Monica Buderescu who is now a TV journalist come to do a puff-piece profile on the aging spaceman. Tensions mount as the Admiral’s daughters clash over whether their father’s increasingly erratic behavior is a sign of dementia, paint-ball wielding grandsons - hell-bent on destruction - turn the island into a war zone, and the bored Monica, her camera crew grounded by the storm, indulges in farcical sexual hijinks.

 

When a suspected terrorist washes ashore, the motley assembly—stranded by the storm—has no choice but to hold him captive. When at the holiday meal the Admiral toasts America’s decline an unruly debate ensues on the bankrupt values of consumer-driven Capitalism and the impending collapse of Western Civilization. After dinner, the Admiral unveils an absurd plan to escape the coming apocalypse by launching everyone’s DNA into orbit on a homemade rocket. As midnight strikes, his rocket lifts off, the Coast Guard storms the island, and chaos erupts. In the aftermath, both the Admiral’s home and the family’s fragile delusions lie smoking in ruins. In a final moment of hope within the madness, a shaken Monica turns to the Admiral for redemption and dreams of drifting through space - curled in his arms - weightless and free till the end of time.
